Gallery: Sheriff Jack Strain joins search for cat killer

COVINGTON, La. (WGNO) — Saint Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain joined animal welfare groups and other volunteers to help spread the word about an animal abuse case.

Strain’s office and the others are looking to find whoever cut a cat in half in the Country Club Estates subdivision.  Only the front half of the cat was found. People involved with the investigation believe a large bladed tool or weapon, like a machete, may have been used.

Volunteers spent the day going door-to-door and passing out fliers in the area.  The Humane Society of Louisiana organized the response.

WGNO News first reported the story about the mutilation last week.  You can see the original story here, but beware because there is a graphic photograph of the cat that was killed.

The Southern Animal Foundation, which operates a low-cost veterinary clinic on Magazine Street in New Orleans, is helping to organize a reward for the tip that leads to the cat’s killer.  At last word, the reward was over $1,000.

Strain also said he is taking steps to ramp up animal cruelty investigations in the parish with plans to train and assign a deputy specifically to the cases.
